The Moseley Railway Trust has made good progress with the construction of
the 2ft gauge Apedale Valley Light Railway near Newcastle-Under-Lyne,
North Staffordshire. Operation of public passenger trains is expected to
commence during the summer of 2010. A Grand Opening Gala will be held at
Apedale on 18th/19th September, during which the official opening ceremony
will take place - hopefully with a VIP "cutting the ribbon".
It is planned that three locomotives will be in steam, with a range of IC
locos also operating. In all there should be over 65 locomotives present.
There will also be a number of NG model railways and a wide range of
traders, vintage vehicles and other attractions. The adjacent Apedale
Heritage Centre will be running underground tours of their coal mine, and
the caf will be serving their legendary oatcakes.

More on T gauge (3mm gauge) - this is in German:
http://www.uwefenk.de/
Which translates to...
Uwe Fenk has built a QTT (quarter TT scale = T scale) model of a part of
Berlin. Apparently this QTT scale (1:480, 3mm gauge track) is very close
to the 1:500 scale used as a standard scale for architectural models, so
he was able to combine an existing architectural model of central Berlin
(built for planning purposes in the mid-1990s) with a T scale ICE train
(and others). To make this work, he has developed various German vehicles
that are shown in the diagrams and photos - steam (18-201), EMU (ICE and
Berlin S-Bahn) and electric (E101). He built the ICE and the others using
drives from the Japanese (KK Eishindo) models, which were actually built
for the 1:450 T scale, but the difference probably does not matter, as
they all run on 3mm guage track.

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup
Docklands Light Railway
A new timetable was introduced in July with the aim of increasing capacity
by 11%. Frequency in the morning peak on the Bank-Lewisham route, for
example, has gone up from from 13 to 15 trains per hour.
East-West Rail
A planning application for up to 5,311 dwellings at Newton Longville,
submitted to Aylesbury Vale District Council in June, includes a site for
a new station.
Nuneaton
Construction of the 1580 yd Nuneaton North Chord, providing an improved
link for freight trains between the Leicester-Birmingham line and the WCML
by removing conflicting moves across the station, is to go ahead. It will
run from the Birmingham side of the existing flyover that spans the WCML
and join it near Canal Farm. Work is due to begin early in 2011 with
completion towards the end of 2012.
Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first railway to
be built purely by enthusiasts and volunteers in the UK, it is planned to
hold a "LCLR 50" weekend on 4th/5th September 2010 at the recently
re-opened line's new site at Skegness Water Leisure Park.
http://tinyurl.com/32ysw8x
Liverpool
Phase 1 of the upgrade of Central station, completed in 2009, saw a new
travel centre and shops opened. Merseytravel is now seeking contractors
for the second phase, which will see improvements to the concourse,
waiting rooms and toilets. The final phase is to expand platform space
but to allow this Moorfield station will first have to be refurbished and
improved to cope with displaced passengers.
Carlisle
After several failed attempts it appears agreement may be close on the
type of road traffic control measures needed to allow work to start on the
2m station forecourt improvement scheme.
York
Network Rail has applied for permission to install new signals on
platforms 9 amd 10 at York as part of a remodelling scheme with the aim of
making it easier for trains to enter and leave the station. The project
would involve laying an additional line between the Holgate Junction
bottleneck and the station. The aim is for the overall scheme to be
completed by 2014 without harming the station's listed status.
Durham
Planned public transport improvements include moving the bus station
nearer to the railway station at the top of North Road.
Tyneside
Timbers of the 1893 NER-designed 1,700ft long and listed Dunstan Staithes
were ravaged by another serious fire on 7th July.
North Wales
A new 20m road/rail bridge is planned on the Cambrian Coast line to
replace the currently privately-owned Pont Briwet toll bridge at
Penrhyndeudraeth near Porthmadog. Consent will be required to demolish
the present 1860 Grade 2 listed structure which is in a poor state of
repair.

Republic of Ireland
Most of the new and relocated stations built as a result of the
quadrupling of the main Dublin-Cork line to cope with growth in Dublin's
suburban traffic are now in service. The exception is the three-
platformed Kishogue which, although well advanced, is now unlikely to open
because new housing that it would serve has not materialised.
